Engine
The engine is a Ford OHV Kent. This tried and trusted unit produces a maximum of about 110 BHP. The engine components in the main are all standard. Components can be lightened and balanced within tightly controlled limits.

Gearbox
Almost exclusively Formula Ford cars use a 4 speed Hewland racing gearbox transaxle. Classic Formula fords use primarily the MK 8 & 9 boxes. These have no limited slip differentials but all the gear ratios are interchangeable, for different circuits around the country. Typically to race at all the circuits in the UK you would require up to 20 different ratios. New .. Gear Selection Summary

Costs
Fact: There is not a cheap form of motor racing! However Classic Formula Ford is the closest you will get. A good car will cost between £3500 - £7000, with running costs of between £3000 - £7000 a year, dependent upon your level of technical knowledge, the spare time you have and the number of races you do.

If you are competing for the first time you will need £1000 for good safety equipment and the costs associated with getting a licence. If you fancy it come and join the classic Formula Ford register we can be contacted at www.classicformulaford.com , or if you have any other question I can be contacted at andrew.powell2@ntlworld.com.

If you require a full copy of the Formula Ford 1600 Technical Regulations these are available from Ford Motorsport direct.
